Surrealism

About

When thinking about Surrealism, Dali's melting clock and Frida Magritte's figures made from clouds are usually among the first things that surface in one's mind. This art movement came around in Europe in the 1920s, and the goal is to basically create something that looks visually weird and unnatural. Although the art of Surrealism is weird and may even defies logic, it normally "make sense" when trying to understand it on a deeper level. There are many features of Surrealistic Art and they are the following: dream-like scenarios and meaningful imageries, illogical juxtapositions and bizarre assemblages of common objects (just to name a few).

André Breton was born on February 19 1896 in Normandy, France. he is essentially the father of Surrealism and he is known for a lot of things such as his work Surrealist Manifesto that he published in 1924. In his work, he would defined the term surrealism as "pure psychic automatism". He was originally a member of the Dada group but he later became an important figure on leading the Surrealist movement in same year. During his lifetime, he produced a lot of writings related to poetry, novels, criticism, as well as theories. Mad Love (L'Amour fox) (Gallimard, 1937) is an example of his work. He passed away in Paris on September 28, 1966.
